Chapter 28

The pod returned to its docking position. Its airlock began the process of pressurization so that Sandra could climb back into the mech bay and prepare to assist her team on the surface. While waiting on that she got her team prepared. "Mech team, check in."

"Red mech ready to rock-and-roll." Royce checked in from his familiar position.

"Orange mech ready." The stern voice of Percy said from her old mech color.

"Um, Yellow mech here, all set to go." The greenhorn Aleisha called out. Sounding nervous for her first live EVA.

"Mech team is ready. As we discussed here are the assignments. Royce, you're on ring four to start. Get over to ring three as soon as you are done there. Percy, Aleisha is with you on ring two. Once I'm suited up in the blue mech, I'll be at ring one. First one done with go to ring three and we will get this done together. Everyone keep me updated each step of the way. Exiting the pod now and will be out the door in ten minutes."

Sandra's personal comm allowed her to keep tabs on what the team were doing while transferring to her mech.

"Copy that, Sandra. We'll monitor the team from here." Esteban said. "Heads up mech-ops. The surface of this rock is different. Take your time on the drills until we see how they're acting."

"Roger." Percy responded. "Aleisha and I have equipped the hard drills for this one. I'll start the drilling first to test their effectiveness."

"Negative. You'll let Aleisha do the drilling as I told you earlier. You are to supervise her, but let her do the work. She needs the experience more than you do." Sandra couldn't believe she had to repeat herself already.

"Understood. I wanted to just get the drilling made sure it was safe."

"Percy. Do what you're told before I pull you back to the bay."

"Roger. You're the boss."

Sandra yanked on her restraints and rushed through the system checks. She needed to get out on that surface to monitor the team before Percy did something stupid.

There was a reason she wanted things done a certain way. He wouldn't be a part of the team for that long. If he left before Aleisha was ready to go solo, Sandra would be stuck with a half-trained greenhorn while on-boarding another. Why was it so difficult to obey orders?

The mech bay airlock doors opened with a hiss as air pushed out in to the emptiness of space. Sandra piloted her mech toward ring one while looking at her monitors to confirm the team were completing their tasks. As she feared Royce was just arriving at ring 4.

"Royce, what took you so long to get to your ring?"

"This surface is slick. I needed to go slower than expected the further out I got."

"No excuses. You should have informed me before I noticed."

"Sorry, Sandra."

"Just keep me informed if you come across any more issues." Sandra looked at the ring 2 duo and noticed orange mech holding the drill. "Percy,
